Himalayan Hospitality and Tourism Development Network (HHTDN) has demanded that Bagdogra Airport, the only airport in North Bengal and Sikkim, not be repaired during the tourist season. HHTDN has contacted the Director of the Bagdogra Airport regarding this. In addition, the chief ministers of West Bengal and Sikkim have also been asked to intervene in this matter. In connection with this, on January 18, HHTDN sent a letter to the Defense Minister of India, Rajnath Singh. Under Air Force control, this airport.

The airport will be closed from 11 to 25

Therefore, a letter has been written again on behalf of HHTDN. This suggests that the runway and other repair work to be done by keeping Bagdogra airport closed from 11 to 25 April 2022 should be postponed. Here, January to June is the tourist season. April is the most important month in that category as well. The tourism industry here generates 60% of the area’s annual income during this time. During such a time, tourists would stop coming if Bagdogra airport were closed for repairs. This will adversely affect the tourism industry of North Bengal and Sikkim, including the Darjeeling Hills region.

For almost two years already, the tourism industry has been adversely affected by the Corona pandemic. Because of this, the repair work on the Bagdogra airport runway, which is supposed to start in April, should be put on hold. In addition, July to August has been suggested as the best time to perform the repairs. The tourism industry here will not be affected much by it.

HHTDN General Secretary Samrat Sanyal explained that earlier also a letter was sent to the Union Civil Aviation Minister, to the Chief Minister of West Bengal, and the Defense Minister of India about the matter. We have once again written to the Director of Bagdogra Airport. By doing so, we will once again call on the Chief Ministers of West Bengal and Sikkim to intervene in this matter. The tourism industry has been urged to think about solving the problems of its people.
