SEO – Search Systems
Search Systems are what you commonly refer to as Search Engines (Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, etc.). Historically, they have been some of the most complex systems ever invented.
SEO Search Systems have four main responsibilities:
- Crawling – The process of parsing content from all websites on the Web. The number of available domains is over 360 million, so this is a massive undertaking.
- Indexing – Finding a place to store all of the data gathered during the crawling stage so it can be accessed.
- Rendering – A site built with JavaScript, for example, may have enhanced features and content. Some pages are crawled before they are actually indexed, so this process does not happen for all pages. During indexing, rendering might occur if there are no resources available to perform the task.
- Ranking – By querying data, relevant results pages can be crafted based on user input. Search engines use different ranking criteria to provide users with the best answer to their queries.

What are Web Crawlers?
Web crawlers are used by Google (and other search engines like Bing, Yandex, Baidu, Yahoo, or DuckDuckGo) to locate websites and web pages on your website so that they can display them in search results.
In web crawlers, the links on the website are indexed by emulating users and navigating through them. Custom user agents are used by web crawlers to identify themselves. Google has several web crawlers, but the ones most commonly used are Googlebot Desktop and Googlebot Smartphone.
