Who is Vidyadhar Bhattacharya?

Vidyadhar Bhattacharya was the chief architect of that Jaipur city, whose original map still amazes people today, that in the 18th century, India had an architect who could build such a beautiful and planned city. In realizing the dream of Amer Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh to establish this modern city, he played a key role. His name is also referred to in many books as Vidyadhar Chakraborty. His parents were from West Bengal.

Bengali Architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya

Vidyadhar was an expert in mathematics, craftsmanship, astrology, and Sanskrit. Gaur-Brahmin by birth, ten of his Vedic ancestors had migrated to Jaipur when Durga Shila Devi was introduced, Amer-states Kuldevi, from Bangladesh. In fact, Vidyadhar’s ancestor was one of them. Vidyadhar remained under Sawai Jai Singh’s rule and was occasionally honored and rewarded after the death of the ruler in 1743.

Jaipur’s city planner and chief Architect Vidyadhar didn’t need any introduction. Swai Jai Singh had complete faith in his intellect and abilities. Vidyadhar was given the assignment to build the new city of Amber when the idea of building it nearby arose in 1727. Jaising first named it ‘Sawai Jainagar’ after his own name, which later became shortened to ‘Sawai Jaipur’ and then shortened to ‘Jaipur’ in common speech.

He divided Jaipur into different squares (quartets) as per Vastu Shastra based on right-angled routes, developed a specialized market for wares, and built many majestic constructions that are used as examples in many universities in India and abroad. The architectural planning of Le Corbusier’s Chandigarh draws heavily on the city planning of Jaipur.

A. A. Korotskaya of Russia has described in detail the distinctive architecture of Vidyadhar and Jaipur in his famous book City of India.

Vidyadhar’s prominence at the Jaipur court was such that his son Murlidhar Chakraborty was not only appointed to his father’s post but also given a jagir with an annual income of Rs 5000. This beautiful city, mapped by such a virtuous city planner, today has no descendant of the same architect who drew its blueprints.

Controversy over half map poster of Indian map in Congress’ Belagavi conference, BJP accuses

A heated political debate has erupted nationwide over the map of India displayed on posters at the Congress‘ Belagavi convention in Karnataka. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress of showing an incomplete map that portrays Kashmir as part of Pakistan.

BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya criticized the map in a post on Twitter. He alleged that the hoardings at the event, which featured images of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, displayed a distorted map of India. “The Congress has put up an incomplete map at the Belagavi event, showing Kashmir as part of Pakistan,” he wrote.

BJP leader Shehzad Poonawala also condemned the Congress for the map. He accused the party of promoting a divisive agenda, stating, “This reflects the Congress’ ‘break India’ mindset. Their distorted map shows Jammu and Kashmir as part of Pakistan and China. This is not the first time Congress has done this—it aligns with their history of supporting narratives that weaken India’s unity.”

The controversy stems from the depiction of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Aksai Chin missing from the map shown on the banners. The Congress had organized the event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi taking over as Congress President in 1924. Notably, it was in Belagavi that Gandhi chaired the Congress Working Committee a century ago.

The word ‘Aam’ in Aam Aadmi Party is as relevant as ‘Gulab’ and ‘Jamun’ in Gulabjamun.”

Thakur also alleged that the AAP has failed to deliver on its promises, such as cleaning the Yamuna River and reducing Delhi’s pollution levels. “Despite tall claims, the pollution level in the city still exceeds 500,” he added, criticizing the AAP for neglecting its environmental commitments.
