After being convicted in a defamation case in Surat, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified from membership in the Lok Sabha.

He was given a 30-day bail in this case, though, so he could file an appeal with a higher court.

As per Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act and Article 102(1)(e) of the Constitution, he has been disqualified from the day of his conviction.

Although Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case appears to be a setback at the moment, experts say it may actually prove beneficial for him and his party.
