Manipur’s assembly session begins today. The assembly session will be held in Manipur for the first time since the unrest that began on May 3rd. The Manipur Legislative Assembly’s one-day session is likely to include discussion on the present state of the state’s ethnic conflict.
Due to security concerns, the majority of Kuki MLAs are likely to miss the assembly session. A total of six out of ten Kuki-dominated MLAs have already taken leave from the Speaker.
As soon as proceedings began on Tuesday, Congress MLAs created a ruckus and the Assembly adjourned sine die.
Last month, the government had suggested holding the assembly session on August 21; however, after failing to receive consent from the Raj Bhavan, the schedule was changed and prolonged till August 28. The summons for the assembly session was made last week by the Chief Minister’s Office. It will take place on August 29. The most recent assembly meeting took place in March.
The ethnic violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3 has so far resulted in more than 160 fatalities and hundreds of injuries.
