Amarnath Yatra temporarily suspended due to bad weather

Due to the terrible weather in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, the Shri Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily halted. Both the base camp Baltal and Pahalgam routes have been closed to passengers.

An official said, “The yatra has been momentarily suspended in the morning. No pilgrim has been permitted to approach the sacred cave. In Nunwan and Pahalgam base camps, over 3,200 pilgrims have been lodged, and in the Baltal base camp, more than 4,000 have been lodged.

The pilgrims won’t be able to make any more journeys, according to representatives of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, unless the weather improves. Beginning on July 1 and running through August 31, 2023, is the Amarnath Yatra.

Amarnath Cloudburst: Amarnath Yatra postponed due to cloudburst near Amarnath cave, death toll rises to 17

On Friday, sudden floods in the area of the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir washed away a number of tents and communal kitchens. The number of fatalities in this crash has risen to 17. 65 passengers have been hurt. In addition, it is reported that roughly 40 pilgrims are missing.

At least 15,000 pilgrims who were left stranded by cloudburst-caused flash floods close to the revered Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir have been relocated to lower base camp Panjtarni. An ITBP official revealed this on Saturday, stating that the ITBP has also boosted the number of teams working on the passage leading from the bottom portion of the sacred cave to Panjtarni.

The Amarnath Yatra has been postponed in the wake of this tragedy, according to a senior administration official. The decision to continue the rescue effort will be made after the rescue effort is completed. But late on Friday night, a fresh group of pilgrims embarked on the Amarnath Yatra, traveling from the Jammu base camp to the Baltal and Pahalgam base camps in Kashmir.

Due to the unexpected surge on Friday evening, the majority of the people stranded near the holy cave area have been moved to Panjtarni, the official added. The evacuation process lasted till 3.38 in the morning. According to an ITBP spokeswoman, there are no travelers in the area. So far, 15,000 people have been taken to a safe location by evacuation.

Two ALH Dhruv and Mi-17 V5 helicopters have been sent by the Air Force from Srinagar to the Amarnath cave site to assist in rescue efforts. Additionally, Chandigarh has two transport aircraft on standby: an AN-32 and an Ilyushin-76.

Shri Amarnath Yatra has been stopped due to changes in weather and heavy rain in Jammu and Kashmir. Due to the possibility of landslides on the Pahalgam and Baltal routes, the administration has postponed the yatra leaving for this morning on the Baltal and Pahalgam routes.

Pilgrims have been asked to stay in the base camps till the weather clears. However, amidst the rain, the seventh batch has been sent to Kashmir Valley to see Baba Barfani from Jammu. 6351 pilgrims were involved in the batch that was dispatched on Tuesday.

Administrative officials say that the period of rain is continuing in the Kashmir Valley since night. The Pahalgam and Baltal roads are prone to landslides due to rain. The weather is not clear even near the holy cave of Shri Amarnath. It has been decided to postpone the yatra due to the safety of devotees in Aceh. In the camps, devotees have been provided with all the necessary arrangements. The journey will be resumed as soon as the weather clears.

About 19 thousand followers visited Baba Barfani on Monday, the fifth day. The sixth batch of passengers from the base camp in Bhagwati Nagar, Jammu, was released under strict security measures with 7276 passengers. The Yatra is receiving a lot of support from Shiva worshippers. As the voyage continues, the number of followers grows steadily. Due to the increased number of pilgrims, the city has become more crowded. The city’s main markets are crowded with tourists.

For Amarnath Yatris, the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board has launched the Passenger Feedback Service (PFS). This collects input from travelers by SMS regarding their opinions on the standard of lodging, hygiene, and meals at the travel camps.
