The Facebook CEO’s personal fortune plummeted on Monday as Mark Zuckerberg lost near to USD 7 billion in a few hours when social media giants Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram went down.

After Facebook’s stocks plunged following the global outage, Zuckerberg also fell to 5th on the Forbes billionaire list. Bill Gates has more wealth than Zuckerberg, with a total worth of USD 121.6 billion.

Facebook Inc.’s network suffered a major global outage yesterday which resulted in a flood of companies pulling their advertising from the social media giant’s network.

Previously, Mark Zuckerberg was ranked third in Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. Forbes reports that Facebook’s stock fell 5% on Monday, extending its 15% loss since mid-September.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the disruption to Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram; telling millions of his users that services will be returned to normal on Tuesday.

During a Facebook post, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger were returning to service. “I’m sorry about today’s disruption — I know how much you rely on our services to stay in touch with the people you care about,” he said.

Similarly, WhatsApp and Instagram confirmed this through its official channel of Twitter and told that it will be rectified soon.

Thousands of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram users, including those in India; were unable to access these platforms on Monday evening due to a global outage.

Facebook Apologized

Some of our applications and products are having trouble being accessed by some people. Facebook apologized for any inconvenience caused by the outage and vowed to restore things as soon as possible.

As netizens shared posts and memes about the outage, the microblogging platform Twitter was awash with tweets. Facebook users in India are among the most numerous of all its platforms.

In India, 51 crore people use WhatsApp, 41 crore people use Facebook, and 21 crore people use Instagram; according to government data released earlier this year.

WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram are down for everyone

Many users are experiencing outages of WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, three apps are down that belong to the Facebook parent company. These problems occurring on the Web as well as on their respective smartphone apps.

Several people have reported problems with social media apps and instant messaging platforms on Android, iOS, and web platforms.

DownDetector reports an increase in the number of people not being able to send or receive WhatsApp across regions on October 4. New messages cannot be sent or received by users.

Users on Instagram cannot log in, refresh their feeds, or send direct messages (DMs) due to the same issue. It appears that the issue began late in the evening, as the outage began at around 9:15 pm IST.

A similar problem is being seen with Facebook App, in which users are not able to refresh. Many experts have informed about this information by sharing their reactions on Twitter.

Despite the fact that it may still be too early to tell, it appears to be a DNS server issue. Facebook or Instagram responds with a timeout when the website or app asks for a refresh.

WhatsApp Banned over 20 Lakh Indian Accounts in August

As per a WhatsApp compliance report published in August, the messaging platform banned roughly 20 Lakh Indian accounts while receiving 420 complaints. During the period under review, WhatsApp banned 20,70,000 Indian accounts, according to its latest report.

Indian accounts are identified by their +91 phone numbers, it explained. Previously, Facebook reported that more than 95% of bans were caused by spam messages sent automatically or in bulk. WhatsApp bans an average of around 8 million accounts per month in order to prevent abuse across its platform.

In its latest report, WhatsApp reported receiving 420 user feedbacks across 105 account-related reports, 222 ban appeals, 34 other reports, 42 product reports, and 17 safety reports during august. Based on the report, 41 accounts were “acted upon” during this period.

WhatsApp specifies that “Accounts Actioned” pertains to reports that have been dealt with by the company. A complaint resulted in either an account being banned or restoring an account that had been previously banned and the complaint was cleared.

More than 3 million Indian accounts have been banned by WhatsApp, while 594 grievance reports have been lodged by the platform between June 16 and July 31.

New IT rules that came into effect on May 26 mandate that large digital platforms (over 5 million users) publish compliance reports every month, detailing the complaints they receive and the actions they take.

Before, WhatsApp had emphasized that due to its end-to-end encryption, it did not have access to messages’ contents. Aside from behavioral signals from the accounts, it relies on unencrypted information, including reports, profile photos, group photos, and descriptions, as well as AI tools in order to detect and prevent abuse on its platform, said the company.
