The passport fraud prevention process has been enhanced. Government plans to issue chip-based electronic passports with advanced security features, according to deputy minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan.

The Ministry of External Affairs plans to issue chip-enabled passports with advanced security features, according to a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha. The e-passport is equipped with smart card technology, which has a radio frequency identification chip (RFID).
The chip will store personal data digitally
It was confirmed by the minister that the chip’s features are in conformity with the policies of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations agency that establishes standards for international travel documents, including e-passports. Applicants’ personal information will be stored digitally on a chip included in the passport booklet. A tamper with this chip will result in the passport not being authenticated, as the system is designed to detect the tamper.
The delay in issuing visas
According to him, an e-passport will allow citizens to substantially upgrade existing passports and services. Another question asked about the number of Passport Kendras in the country. There are currently 521 Passport Kendras in the country, which include 93 Passport Seva Kendras and 428 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, visa processing times have increased in countries such as the UK and Canada. The countries responsible for granting visas and the procedures associated with it make unilateral decisions. Although, the Indian government stresses at various levels and in bilateral meetings/forums that Indians need a quick, simple, and liberal visa process.
