In the United States, Instagram announced Thursday that it will begin testing new age verification options for its users. A new way to verify a person’s age is being tested by Meta Platforms Inc, which owns the photo-sharing service.

In a blog post, Metadata governance director Erica Finkle wrote that when we know someone is a teen (13-17 years old), private accounts have defaulted, unrelated adults are prevented from contacting them, and ads cannot reach them outside of their network.
Instagram Age Verification Tool
As part of its efforts to safeguard users’ privacy, the company has partnered with Yoti, one of the leading companies that provide online age verification.
By uploading a video selfie, Yoti‘s technology verifies users’ ages. Upon verification of the age, Instagram says Meta and Yoti will remove the picture.
For verification of the user’s identity, three mutual followers may be chosen, and at least 18-year-olds must vouch for them.
Following criticism and opposition to Instagram Kids, Instagram halted its launch last year.
Parents must approve Instagram Kids’ use, and it would offer age-appropriate, ad-free content. The company’s launch plans were slashed, however, after safety concerns were raised by lawmakers and advocacy groups.
