Elton John and Britney Spears collaborated for the first time to make the club-ready song “Hold Me Closer,” which is sleek and filled with retro feelings. The funky, piano-driven tune borrows from John’s “The One” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” tracks and builds on his 1971 smash “Tiny Dancer” with Spears’ soaring, fluttering vocals.

It’s Spear’s first new song since her 2016 album Glory and her first single since her contentious conservatorship ended. John has been putting out new music lately, notably the 16-track album The Lockdown Sessions from 2021.
Producing the song is Andrew Watt, who has previously worked with Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Eddie Vedder, Ozzy Osbourne, and Post Malone.
The song is reminiscent of the smash single from the previous year, “Cold Heart (PNAU Remix),” which combined Dua Lipa’s vocals with the tracks “Kiss the Bride,” “Rocket Man,” “Where’s the Shoorah,” and “Sacrifice” by Elton John.
