Amit Shah, who is on his way to Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday, will inaugurate the first direct flight between Srinagar and Sharjah and United Arab Emirates (UAE). This is the first time Amit Shah has visited the union territory since Article 370 was scrapped in August 2019. After a meeting with top federal officials, international flights will be operating in Srinagar from today.

Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union minister of civil aviation, said almost one month ago that efforts are being made to start international services in Srinagar, and that it will support the development of the union territory.

On September 25, he announced the extension of Srinagar Airport’s terminal from 25,000 square meters to 63,000 square meters. The Srinagar airport will receive an investment of 1,500 crores, and the Jammu airport will receive an investment of 600 crores.

The Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole, met on Monday to discuss necessary arrangements to be put in place and how to handle passengers at Srinagar airport because of the Covid pandemic.

A government spokesman said immigration and customs arrangements were also discussed. Officers were directed to execute the arrangements meticulously.

This included managing and regulating incoming passengers, segregating domestic and international passengers, performing Rapid PCR tests at the airport for international passengers, and performing RT-PCR tests for Covid within 48 hours.

Additionally, brick kilns within eight kilometers of the airport were discussed at the meeting and the spokesman said other concerns included alternative approach roads.
