HC sentenced Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister to 3 years imprisonment, imposed a fine of Rs 50-50 lakhs

In a case involving disproportionate assets, the Madras High Court on Thursday convicted Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy to three years in prison under the Prevention of Corruption Act. As a result, he lost his position as minister and was banned from serving as an MLA.

Based on the information obtained, P Vishalakshi, K. Ponmudy’s wife, was also given a three-year jail sentence by Judge G Jayachandran. Ponmudy and his spouse were also fined Rs 50 lakh apiece by the judge. The minister and his spouse were already found guilty by the High Court and given a sentence today.

To allow him to file a special leave petition before the Supreme Court, senior counsel NR Elango asked the court to grant him leave and suspend the sentence while speaking on behalf of the offenders. In response, the judge delayed the sentence for 30 days and gave 30 days of leave. The judge declared that he would have to turn himself up to the trial court in Villupuram at the end of the suspension time.

ED officer arrested in Tamil Nadu for taking bribe of Rs 20 lakh

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Tamil Nadu has an official under arrest, according to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC). The ED officer was detained by DVAC on suspicion of accepting a bribe. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) provided this information on Friday.

The ED officer is charged with accepting a Rs 20 lakh bribe. DVAC is currently investigating the Madurai sub-regional ED office. There have already been arrests of ED officials for taking bribes before this.

An ED subregional office in Madurai conducted the investigation after detaining the suspect in Dindigul. State police officers were stationed outside the central government building during this period. Ankit Tiwari was the name of the arrested officer, according to an official release from DVAC. He is employed by the Central Government’s Madurai Enforcement Department as an enforcement officer.

Tamil Nadu government makes it mandatory for hotels and lodges to provide accommodation to drivers of guests

Hotels and lodges in Tamil Nadu must provide dormitories and toilets to vehicle drivers as part of new rules amended by the Tamil Nadu government.

According to changes established by the government, hotels, and lodges must offer a dorm to give guests’ drivers access to exclusive housing.

In an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Combined Development and Building (TNCDB) Rules, 2019, hotels and lodges are required to provide amenities such as dormitories for vehicle drivers. TNCDB has tweaked two specific rules in this regard.

Stay on dismissal of jailed Senthil Balaji, Governor will now take advice from Attorney General

At 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Governor RN Ravi of Tamil Nadu fired Minister Senthil Balaji, who is currently incarcerated on suspicion of a cash-for-job scam. But five hours later, he changed his decision.

The Governor had given the directive to immediately remove Balaji from the Council of Ministers. Following consultation with the Attorney General, he will now make a final decision.

Late-night sources in the governor’s office claimed that the governor discussed the matter with the attorney general and deferred making a decision. Balaji will still serve as a minister.

On June 14, the ED detained Senthil on suspicion of corruption. Balaji was later sent to judicial prison till July 12.

Raid on the premises of former state minister SP Velumani in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu; 7 MLAs detained
