The $5 billion Google lawsuit about the tracking that occurs when using the Chrome browser’s “incognito mode” has moved one step closer to trial after a US court denied the tech giant’s motion for summary judgment.

In a California court on Monday, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez-Rogers rejected Google’s request for summary judgment in the lawsuit, which contended that the internet giant is tracking and gathering data even when users utilize the private ‘Incognito’ mode on its Chrome browser.

Users have the option to use Google Chrome’s “Incognito” mode to browse the internet without having their activity saved to the browser or their devices.

According to The Verge, the judge cited statements made in the Chrome privacy notice, privacy policy, incognito splash screen, and search & browse privately help page regarding how incognito mode restricts the information kept or allows users to manage the information they share.

Chrome will let Android users lock their incognito sessions with the new update

Users of Android devices will soon be able to lock their Chrome Incognito sessions with a password code or biometric data when they quit the app.

The capability has been made available to Google Chrome users on Android after previously only being available to iOS users.

How to enable this feature

This feature can be activated by going to Chrome Settings > Privacy & security and turning on the “Lock incognito tabs when Chrome closes” toggle. Therefore, the user’s incognito session will be automatically locked the next time they close Chrome. You can use a biometric unlock, such as a fingerprint unlock, or a phone lock code to open an incognito tab.

Step 7- Google displays your computer’s remaining space, and you can choose to keep offline data on your computer or delete it completely.

Step 8- After choosing between keeping or deleting offline data, click ‘Save Changes’ to activate offline Gmail on your computer.

Step 4: Choose ‘Enabled.’ Once you have enabled the Chrome flag, you will be prompted to relaunch Chrome.

Step 5: The changes will take effect after you tap ‘Relaunch’.

Step 6: Make sure it worked by opening a webpage or by returning to the article and tapping on the three-dot menu in the top right corner.

Step 7: When you select Share, a pop-up window will appear. You will find ‘Long Screenshot’ at the bottom of the pop-up. Touch that option.

Step 8: The next screen will look like a crop. Scroll up or down as much as you need using the top and bottom arrows.

Step 9: Click on ‘Next’ in the top-right corner of the screen once you have chosen the desired section of the web page to be captured. As well as editing or annotating the screenshot if you wish, you can do both.

Google rolls out a new Chrome update to prevent increased security risks to Chrome users

Users are advised to update their web browser to the latest version after Google confirmed a critical security risk with Chrome. As a result of the active exploitation of the security loophole by hackers, it was marked as critical.

What is a zero-day vulnerability?

Zero-day vulnerabilities have been identified as a security risk. Google managed to find and fix the problem through the update only after it had been actively attacked by hackers. “an exploit for CVE-2021-37973 exists in the wild.” Google wrote in the blog. Such vulnerabilities are more dangerous than regular security loopholes since hackers typically have a head start on security researchers and have already exploited them.

This is a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability according to Google’s blog post. When dynamic memory is incorrectly used during program execution, such loopholes may exist. According to a note by Kaspersky, an attacker can exploit an error that occurs after a program frees a memory location if it fails to clear its pointer to that memory.

Chrome browser needs to be updated to the latest version according to Google

Chrome users have been urged to update their browsers to take advantage of the new security fix for the vulnerability. Checking the current version of Chrome can be found in Settings > Help > About Google Chrome.

If Chrome version 94.0.4606.61 or higher is installed, the security fix is in place and functioning. A browser below that indicates it has not yet been updated.

Until the update is available on their browser, users are advised to keep checking for it. If the update is available, install it and restart Chrome to apply the security fix.
