Bangladesh Police identify man who placed Quran at Durga Puja pandal in Comilla

A local man has incited violence against Durga puja pandals in Comilla and other places. Iqbal Hossain, from the city’s Sujanagar area, is the suspect’s name, Comilla’s Superintendent of Police Farooq Ahmed told the Dhaka Tribune.

According to Ahmed, a 35-year-old man had placed the Quran in a Durga Puja pandal in Comilla-Bangladesh, which led to violence and killed three.

In its report, the Dhaka Tribune stated that the police identified Hossain after analyzing CCTV footage from Durga Puja venues. There hasn’t been an arrest yet.

As per the CCTV footage, Hossain goes towards the Durga Puja pandal holding the Quran. Lord Hanuman’s club was later seen walking away with him. Ahmed said; that more details about Hossain will be disclosed at a police briefing on Thursday.

Bangladesh has seen an increase in attacks on Hindu temples since last Wednesday after a social media post appeared showing the Quran kept in a Durga Puja pandal. 66 houses were damaged; and at least 20 Hindu homes were set ablaze late on Sunday night.

Police reported that there have been over 450 arrests in different parts of the country for suspected temple attacks. The Comilla incident led to the arrests of 41 people, including four of Hossain’s friends.

It has been ordered by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, that those who incite violence with religion will face immediate action.

People are also urged not to believe anything; they find on social media without fact-checking it. 169 million people live in Bangladesh, and 10 percent of them are Hindus.
